Broad Spectrum: What It Covers and Why It Matters
A sunscreen labeled Broad Spectrum in the United States has passed an FDA-regulated test confirming it provides meaningful protection across both UVA and UVB wavelengths. Products that do not carry this designation may only be protecting against the sunburn-causing UVB range.
UVA radiation penetrates more deeply into the skin and is present at relatively consistent levels throughout the year, including on cloudy days and through windows. It is strongly associated with photoaging — uneven pigmentation, fine lines, and loss of elasticity — as well as contributing to longer-term skin health concerns. Without broad-spectrum protection, a high SPF number can create a misleading sense of complete coverage.

PA Ratings: The UVA Scale From Asian Markets
If you've purchased sunscreen imported from Japan, South Korea, or other Asian markets, you've likely encountered the PA rating system. Developed by the Japan Cosmetic Industry Association, it quantifies UVA protection in a tiered format: PA+, PA++, PA+++, and PA++++, with each additional plus sign representing a higher degree of UVA protection based on a measure called Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD).
PA ratings are not regulated by the FDA and do not appear on U.S.-domestic sunscreen labels. However, many internationally formulated products available in the U.S. display both an SPF number and a PA rating, giving consumers two data points: one for UVB protection, one for UVA. A product labeled SPF 50+ / PA++++ is offering both high UVB and high UVA protection by the standards of its testing system.
SPF
